Spider Solitaire is one of the well-known variations of the Solitaire game. The goal of the game is to build the cards of descending suit sequence from King to Ace within the tableau columns. When a complete suit is created, it will be automatically removed from the column into one of the 8 foundation piles, and the game is won by filling up all 8 foundation piles.

Spider Solitaire Game Rules

Unlike the traditional Solitaire game, Spider Solitaire is usually played with two decks of cards. This means that players will be dealing with a total of 104 cards. There are 10 tableau columns below, 8 slots for foundation piles, and a draw pile. Just like Solitaire, the card at the top of each column will be shown while the other cards will be facing down.

Cards that are faced up can be moved to another column provided they are one less in rank of the top card in the column they are moving to. For example, a 7 of spades can be moved to a column with an 8 of spades. One stack of cards can be moved to another column following this rule as well. When a column is empty, you can occupy it with any card that is free.

The Draw Pile will place a new card on top of each column when you use it, hence, exercise caution before using it. All cards that are drawn will be used, so eventually, the draw pile will be emptied out instead of being recycled like in a regular Solitaire game.

When a column has a complete suit of descending order from King to Ace, it is automatically removed from the tableau column and brought to the top where the foundation pile is. To win a game of Spider Solitaire, you are required to complete 8 suits of cards in the foundation pile.

Spider Solitaire Tips and Tricks to Win

• The most important step before doing anything is to check out the tableau first and confirm the cards that are faced upwards. This is to ensure you don't miss out on any obvious moves from the start and helps you plan your next moves.


• Uncover as many cards on the tableau as you can before using the draw pile above. Due to the nature of how the draw pile works in Spider Solitaire, it should be your last resort when you have no other moves to make on the tableau.


• When you start building a column with mixed suits in the Two Suit game mode, the higher ranking cards should be prioritized since those cards will be available for a longer period to build on versus lower ranking ones that will soon have an Ace on them and become stuck.


• Try to reveal the cards from the tableau columns whenever possible, even if you have to build different suited cards onto each other.


• Try and clear out one column as early as possible. An empty column is great for putting a King you stumble across, but it can also house any other cards you have which will definitely help immensely in clearing out other columns.


• Use the Hint feature. This is a last resort for most players, but if you are determined to get a win, there is no shame in getting a hint from the computer.

There are some major differences that make Two Suit a much more difficult game mode, such as while you are able to build up columns with cards of different suits, you can only move cards of the same suits when you are moving the cards to a different column (for example a 5, 4, and 3 of hearts can be moved to any 6, but a 5 of spades, and then a 4 and 3 of hearts, cannot be moved as a unit because they are not of the same suit).
